Can you write a happy story based on (inspired by, prompted by, whatever) a sad song?

Yes.

Although I would probably not spell out a happy ending, but leave it more hopeful.

There's nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so. Which is to say, if you think it can be the inspiration for a happy story, why not?
