med school question

Is it true that medical students who are prospective OB/GYN's are required to perform abortions as part of their schooling/training?

Where could I find out if this is the case?

Have you tried google?

And I don't believe this for a second.

I didn't try Google, because I have GADD (google-attention-deficit-disorder.) Example:

Me: I think I'll look up a recipe for chicken and rice. *googles "chicken and rice"*

Google: *ONE BAJILLION INTERESTING THINGS*

Me: (eight hours later) ::rubs tired eyes:: Gee, I'm still hungry, but now I know EVERYTHING about poultry and grains!!

So, um. Yeah.

(And I don't believe it either - or I don't want to - but I ran across an article where it was presented as fact.)

I have my doubts that is true for various reasons. But a quick Google shows me this article: http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:vTF_NMgaM8gJ:www.medpagetoday.com/OBGYN/2005ACOGMeeting/tb/1015+abortion+prospective+OB/Gyn+medical+students&hl=en

Which states: Of the ob-gyn abortion providers in the U.S., 57% are over 50 years old, she said, and 87% of the nation's counties have no abortion facilities. "The people who provide abortions are retiring and medical students are not being trained in the procedures."

And from this site: http://www.religioustolerance.org/abo_train.htm

"No program or resident with a religious or moral objection will be required to provide training in, or to perform, induced abortions.

And from here: http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:LQJC0ESooVsJ:www.refuseandresist.org/repro/art.php%3Faid%3D518+abortion+OB/Gyn+medical+students&hl=en

Ms. Fanarjian's question may become unnecessary over the next decade. Though only about half the residency programs in the United States teach ob-gyns in training how to perform abortions, more are adding the training to their programs.

Most notably, beginning next month, New York will become the first city to require abortion techniques as a standard part of training for ob-gyn residents at public hospitals. New York trains a large number of doctors; one of seven doctors in the United States does a residency here. Every year 154 residents rotate through the eight public hospitals that offer ob-gyn residency programs. Those residents who object to abortion on religious or moral grounds can be excused from the training.

Also, further reading tells me that the majority of medical schools only offer abortion services as an elective.

Oh my gosh, you're so thorough!! (Although now I am feeling slightly ashamed/lazy for not just googling it myself.)

Thanks for finding and posting the links - now I just have to find the original comment that sparked my question so I can go refute it. (I don't mind debate, but I hate it when people lie to try to make their point.)

Well, it may not have been a lie. They may have just been misinformed.

Ding ding ding!! A prize to the other fannish homeschooling lady. *g*

As to why I moved/relocated/abandoned and recreated LJ's - it's a verrrrrrrry long story. (Not that you asked, but. Thought I'd throw it out there.)

So. How's things?
