The scene:

I am sitting on the sofa next to Michael, age 6. We are looking over a list of words containing the vowel sets of {a}, {a_e}, {ai}, and {ay}; Michael is telling me if each word uses a "short A" or a "long A."

ME: *points* What is this word?

MICHAEL: Lllllll...lll...lack....llllaaaaake. Lake! It's lake!

ME: That's right. Is "lake" a short A word or a long A word?

MICHAEL: Long A! 'Cause it sounds like aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

ME: Very good. *points* Now try this word.

MICHAEL: *furrows brow* Rrrrrrrrrrrrr...rrraaaaaaaaaaaaac...raaaaaaaaack...no, that's not right. Rrrrake? Rake?

ME: Yes! That word is 'rake.' Is 'rake' a short A word or a long A word?

MICHAEL: Shhhhh...long. *brightens* Hey! Shhh-long! Schlong!

ME: *giggles*

MICHAEL: Schlong, schlong, schlong, schlong! That's my answer for everything!

ME: *gives up, falls off sofa laughing*

Just re-watched "Shattered" - there is something significant about that episode (along with "Asylum") - I can't decide how best to define it, even if it is only for myself.

Is it the pinnacle, the best, the high point of the entire series, or is it simply the halfway place?

Is it the defining moment - and I mean the defining moment - of the Lex and Clark relationship? Is that moment, the moment in "Shattered," when Clark leaves (abandons?) Lex to Dr. Foster and her goons, is that the moment we point to later on and say "That was it; that was the point when their friendship was damaged beyond repair"? At one point, I thought it was, but that's a difficult point to defend given the events of "Asylum" (Clark breaking into Belle Reve in an attempt to free him, *and* willingly using his abilities right in front of Lex; Lex crawling on his belly, spitting blood, trying to get to Clark.)

Or are there two points, two "this far and no farther" moments? One for Lex, one for Clark? If so, which moment belongs to each character?

I'm not sure. I'd like to figure it out. Share your thoughts?
