evil clowns are possessing my smoke alarm

The damned smoke alarm in the hallway right outside my bedroom won't stop chirping. It started a few days ago with some intermittent chirps: annoying, but not sanity-endangering.
Today, I stopped at the store and bought a couple of 9V batteries, figuring that by replacing said batteries in the alarm, the chirping would stop.
WRONG.
Now, instead of an intermittent and infrequent chirp, I have a chirp that is both regular and frequent. I thought about yanking the stupid thing out, but the physical fixture itself is kind of hard-wired into the ceiling, so I can't.
Well. I guess I could, were I to use some wirecutters...and yet somehow, I think that's not in my best interests.
It is at this time I would like to say "GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR," from the very most bottom place in my heart.
*plugs ears*
